Most advice says to prune apple trees in late winter, and for the main structural cuts I agree. But late autumn is a good time to take out the obviously dead wood and anything rubbing against a neighbouring branch.
This year I removed two crossing limbs on the old Bramley and shortened the water sprouts on the younger trees. Everything else waits for February.
